Ways To Protect Your Carpet From Dirt Between Treatments
Despite your best efforts, your carpet is eventually going to fall victim to drops, spills, accidents, and whatever you or your pet drag in with your feet. And of course it isn’t practical to call in the pros every week in order to clean up the messes that your family is inevitably going to make. But then again, you can’t just leave all those spots and stains for months, until you’re ready for your semi-annual carpet cleaning.
Below are a few tricks and methods for those minor carpet cleaning disasters and situations. But in the event of a huge disaster, you might want to call in the professionals, like Sweeney Cleaning Co.
Blot, Don’t Rub
The key to removing stains is to blot. Dab at your spills with a cleaning solution and clean cloth, paper towel, or sponge. Blotting puts the right amount of pressure on the stain in order to soak it up. Whereas, rubbing causes the stain to spread further and deeper into the carpet fibers. Which can lead to a premature breakdown of those fibers, and no one wants that. And you always want to blot from the outside of the stain, moving in towards the middle. As doing the opposite is most likely going to spread the stain around the area, causing the exact opposite of what you’re trying to do.
Club Soda
You’ve probably heard (or not) that club soda is a powerhouse agent against beer and wine stains. Which is totally true-if you’re using it correctly. Here’s where you’re going to put your blotting techniques to the test. If the soda isn’t doing it, mix one part white vinegar and one part water in a handheld sprayer. Spray that all over the affected area and let it sit for a good 10-15 minutes. Once that’s done, all you have to do is press a clean sponge or towel onto the area to absorb the whole mess.
This might be a repeat process if you’ve got a particularly stubborn stain. Now that the stain is gone, rinse off the area with warm water and use your hand to brush the carpet back to its usual direction. Lay down some paper towels and weigh them down in order to absorb the dampness and keep your carpet from growing mold and retaining a bad smell.
Shaving Cream
That’s weird, I know! But one of the best carpet cleaning solutions for general stains is going to be ordinary shaving cream. Apply directly to the stain and let sit for about half an hour. Once the cream has set, blot it away with a dry white cloth and finish by spraying the area with one part vinegar mixed into one part water. Wipe everything away with a clean cloth and make sure your carpet is completely dry.
Dish Detergent Vs. Grease
By far, the best method or agent against carpet stains, is a drop or two of a grease-cutting, dish-washing detergent, like Dawn or Joy, mixed into a cup of water. This is going to cut through the grease in your carpet just like it does on your dishes. Just put the water and soap mixture into a spray bottle and go crazy. Then blot the area dry, as with every other treatment. Again, this is one that you may need to do a few times for larger or more ground in stains.
Hydrogen Peroxide
There are few stains as obvious as blood. So if you’ve gotten a paper-cut or a nose bleed, your carpet or rug probably isn’t ruined. Mix up some water in a mild detergent and spray it on the stain in order to loosen dried blood. Scrape off as much of this as you can from the carpet fibers. Now you’ll need to apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. The solution is going to immediately start foaming, so don’t freak out. Just dab and the stain should vanish like Houdini. Then make sure that your carpet is dry.
Organic Pet Cleanup
Even the best trained show dog may have an accident every once in a while. Rather than using chemicals, head for the organic cleaners. Some scrubbing is going to be necessary after spraying, but the wipe down and dabbing to finish cleaning and drying is going to remain the same. In addition, a lot of these organic cleaners are going to remove coffee stains and sauces too from your carpet.
